Building Hope Through Soccer: An Interview with Metro United FC Founder, Isaac Mukupa

When you meet Isaac Mukupa, founder of Metro United FC, his passion for the community of Matero is instantly clear. A son of Matero, Isaac grew up on its streets, playing soccer wherever he could, dreaming of a day when he might see young talent from his neighborhood reach new heights. Today, Metro United FC is that dream come true. It is a team dedicated not only to developing the skills of young players but also to giving them a purpose that keeps them away from harmful activities.

In a recent interview, Isaac shared his journey, the team’s goals, and the vision he has for Metro United FC’s future. Here’s what he had to say:

From Street Soccer to Community Dreams

“Growing up in Matero, we didn’t have much, but we had each other,” Isaac recalls with a smile. “We’d play soccer right in the roads, using rocks for goalposts, and it was the best part of our day. Those moments on the streets taught us teamwork, resilience, and discipline—qualities I want to pass on to the next generation.”

Isaac saw the potential in these young players early on, knowing that with the right guidance, they could have a different path from the one many others in the community have taken. His love for soccer and Matero merged into a powerful motivation to give back, and he took the bold step of founding Metro United FC in 2019.

Soccer: A Uniting Force for Zambia

Isaac believes soccer is more than just a game; it’s a force that can bring people together. “Soccer has a unique way of connecting us as Zambians. It’s in our blood, and it has the power to break down barriers,” he explains. “Metro United FC is not only about building soccer skills but also about fostering unity and pride in Matero. It’s a community project as much as it is a team.”

Keeping Youth Focused and Disciplined

With substance abuse and gang involvement on the rise, Isaac sees Metro United as a lifeline for young people. “We want to keep the kids and youth away from bad activities. By keeping them engaged in football, we’re giving them a path forward,” he says. Isaac proudly notes the discipline and dedication shown by his team members in both training sessions and league competitions. “These boys show up, work hard, and support each other. They’ve become role models in their own right.”

Challenges in Funding and Expansion Plans

Despite their success, Metro United FC faces significant challenges. Funding remains one of the most pressing issues, as the team is currently managed by Isaac and his younger brother, co-founder Kateya Mukupa. “It’s not easy managing everything ourselves,” Isaac admits. “Right now, we have boys on the team, but we’d love to start a girls’ team to offer the same opportunities to young women in Matero.”

Another challenge is the lack of a dedicated training ground. “Having our own ground would allow us to run more sessions, hold tournaments, and strengthen our presence in the community,” Isaac adds. “Our boys need a space that’s theirs, where they can train without interruptions and feel a sense of ownership.”

Confronting the Growing Trend of Junkies in Matero

One of the most concerning issues in Matero is the rise of so-called “junkies”—young people engaged in destructive behaviors. Isaac is particularly proud of how his team members have resisted these influences. “It’s not easy for them, seeing friends and even family fall into these cycles. But our boys stay committed. They’re building a different future for themselves, and that’s something we’re all incredibly proud of,” he says.

Founder Isaac Mukupa shares his vision and passion with the team, inspiring our young players to stay focused, work hard, and believe in the power of their potential.

The Vision for Metro United FC

Isaac has a clear vision for Metro United FC. He hopes to see more community involvement, better facilities, and the resources to start a girls’ team. “Our dream is to create a thriving sports club where all youth in Matero have a chance to grow, learn, and excel,” Isaac says.

Join the Cause

As Metro United FC continues to grow, community support is essential. From funding for equipment to mentorship and advocacy, there are many ways to get involved. Isaac and his team are determined to make a difference, but they can’t do it alone.

Metro United FC isn’t just a soccer team; it’s a movement to change lives and uplift the community of Matero. Support from local businesses, individuals, and organizations can make a world of difference. For Isaac Mukupa and Metro United, the goal is clear: a future where Matero’s youth are leaders on and off the field.
